Next week, Thailand will host the highly anticipated Global Sustainable Development Congress 2024, co-hosted by Times Higher Education (THE) and Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. This landmark event will take place from June 10-13, 2024, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.

More than 3,000 participants from around the globe, including leaders from universities, governments, businesses, NGOs and civil society will attend the congress to develop urgent solutions to the global sustainability crisis by fostering collaboration and innovation.

Additional stand-out events are the International Green Skills Summit, and THE’s DataLabs, which focuses on empowering sustainability in higher education through data, expert analysis, and global best practices. The event also features an exhibition hall where universities and associations from Thailand and around the world will showcase their sustainability initiatives. Additionally, THE’s Impact Rankings 2024 will be announced during the event. This unique ranking assesses universities based on their contributions to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Attendees will engage in discussions and calls to action, urging universities to align their educational, research, innovation, and outreach programmes with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Participants will have the opportunity to network and collaborate cross-sector. The agenda includes case studies, best practices, successful models, and innovative strategies, with impactful projects being showcased.

The four-day event will concentrate on six critical themes:

  1. Education, gender, and inequality
  2. Health, well-being, and demography
  3. Energy decarbonisation and sustainable industry
  4. Sustainable food, land, water, and oceans
  5. Sustainable cities and communities
  6. Digital revolution for sustainable development

Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, said: “Thailand is a world-leading nation for unleashing the power of its universities to help the planet, and the country, deliver the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It’s wonderful we are partnering with Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation to host the Global Sustainable Development Congress. The event unites governments, businesses, and civic society with universities to drive real change, and it could not be more appropriate for us to have Thailand as a living, live case study of good practice.”
